An Aboriginal Language Has No Word for Left or Right

Guugu Yimithirr speakers always know which way north is. Their grammar makes them check.

In Hopevale, north Queensland, the Guugu Yimithirr language does not really use "left," "right," "in front," or "behind" the way English does. Instead it uses four roots — gungga, jiba, naga, guwa — that mean roughly north, south, east, and west, and uses them constantly. "Move the cup north a little." "There's an ant on your southwest leg." The system is what linguists call an absolute frame of reference, and it is grammatically obligatory: speakers cannot describe a location without committing to a compass bearing.

The linguist John Haviland began documenting it in the 1970s. He noticed that when speakers retold a story, they would gesture in a way that preserved the original geography — pointing genuinely east when describing something east of where the story happened, even if east now lay behind them. The cognitive consequence is real. Stephen Levinson at the Max Planck Institute ran controlled rotation tasks on Guugu Yimithirr speakers and on Dutch comparison subjects: the Aboriginal speakers consistently encoded spatial layouts in absolute terms, the Dutch speakers in egocentric ones.

The ability to keep a stable bearing, in the bush or in a hotel room or at the back of a darkened lecture hall, is not innate to humans — it is what speaking the language trains. Children grow up doing the cognitive bookkeeping that English speakers outsource to a smartphone.

The Whorfian question hangs over the data. The careful claim, the one Levinson defends, is narrower than "language shapes thought": it is that the grammatical category your language forces you to mark is the one you cannot stop attending to.
